A word about Mel…
Mel Douglass grew up in Edgewood, graduated from Edgewood High School in 1970 and from the University of Pittsburgh. He married his high school sweetheart, raised two wonderful children here in Edgewood and launched a successful business career. Mel actively served Edgewood in roles ranging from volunteer fireman to Little League coach to church deacon before he passed in an airplane accident in 1994.
These facts only hint at Mel’s true legacy, which is the wide circle of lives he enriched by his larger-than-life personality, his unquenchable spirit, and his commitment to community service. Those who were lucky enough to have known him will never forget his laugh, his enthusiasm, and his empathy for others. A group of Mel’s EHS friends established the Mel Douglass Fund in 2008 to sustain his legacy while helping Edgewood students who are making a difference. 95 Edgewood students have been awarded Mel Douglass Scholarships since 2008.
