The Mel Douglass Fund honors the memory of a terrific husband, father, son, friend, and role model. Mel grew up in Edgewood and spent most of his life there. Mel was deeply and consistently involved in community service. He was especially active in efforts to support Edgewood’s children. Please see the Remembering Mel section of the website for more information about Mel.
Mel’s love for Edgewood and his passion for volunteering created the spark for the Mel Douglass Scholarships, which are awarded to high school seniors from Edgewood for community service achievements. Since 2008, the Fund has honored and sustained Mel’s legacy by awarding one Mel Douglass Scholarship and several honorable mention scholarships each year.
By raising awareness about Mel among a new group of students each year, the Fund enables Mel to continue to serve as a role model in Edgewood. One aspect of Mel’s legacy we emphasize is that ongoing community service is a key element of a full, rewarding life. Passing this concept along to the young people of Edgewood and then seeing them follow through with their own meaningful achievements in the community is what the Mel Douglass Fund is all about.
We raise financial support for the Mel Douglass Fund through two events each year. The first is a letter to donors and selected others sent about three weeks following the brunch in May at the Edgewood Club where we award the scholarships. This letter allows our donors to learn about the new group of scholarship winners, their achievements, and where they will attend college. The second fundraiser is an annual golf outing in Mel’s memory, usually held in early August. The Mel Douglass Fund is a registered 501.C.3 charity and therefore all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. In addition, all of the fund’s administrative expenses are paid by our Board of Directors. As a result, all donations by those who are not board members are applied directly to current year or future scholarships.
